Description:

This document describes the federal requirements concerning pathogens in sewage sludge applied to land or placed on a surface disposal site, and it provides guidance concerning those requirements. The document is intended for: (1) Owners and operators of treatment works treating domestic sewage; (2) Developers or marketers of sewage sludge treatment processes; (3) Groups that distribute and market sewage sludge products; (4) Individuals involved in applying sewage sludge to land; (5) Regional, state, and local government officials responsible for implementing and enforcing the Part 503 Subpart D regulation; (6) Consultants to these groups; and (7) Anyone interested in understanding the federal requirements concerning pathogens in sewage sludge. Many sewage sludges also contain heavy metals that may pose public health and environmental concerns. The federal regulation under 40CFR Part 503 includes requirements designed to limit the amount of heavy metals in sewage sludge applied to land or placed on a surface disposal site. This documentfocuses on pathogen-related requirments and does not discuss the heavy metal requirements.
