Description:

The United States Postal Service (USPS) in cooperation with EPA’s National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) is engaged in an effort to integrate waste prevention and recycling activities into the waste management programs at Postal facilities. This report describes the findings of the Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessment of the United States Postal Service, Northern Virginia Facilities: Engineering Research and Development (ERD), Processing and Distribution Center (PDC) and Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) located in Merrifield, VA. This assessment was conducted during the week of January 23,1995. The mission of each of the functional areas of the ERD, PDC, and VMF, including operations performed, processes and materials employed and the wastes and emissions generated, are described. The Assessment Team makes recommendations concerning the procurement of office supplies, maintenance supplies and hazardous materials; management of hazardous materials; purchase of chemicals on EPA’s 33/50 list; improvement of source separation and recycling of paper and paper products, metals, plastics, and cooking grease; management of unwanted equipment; and other recommendations that can lead to the elimination, reduction or improved management of the facility’s solid and hazardous waste streams and emissions to air and water.
