Description:

This report summarizes the results of a field demonstration conducted under the SITE program. The technology which was demonstrated was a solvent extraction technology developed by Terra-Kleen Response Group. Inc. to remove organic contaminants from soil. The technology employs a propriety solvent to extract the organic contaminants. Following the extraction, the organic-laden solvent is then filtered and purified, using a proprietary purification unit. Regenerated solvent is continuously recycled through the contaminated soil until a target cleanup level is achieved. The SITE Program evaluated the technology at the Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California. The technology treated soil which was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Contaminated soil was excavated and placed in above ground solvent extraction units for treatment. The purpose of the demonstration was to obtain information on the performance and cost of the technology and assess its use at this and other uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. This report interprets the demonstration data and discusses the potential applicability of the technology. Analytical results showed that PCB concentrations of 144 mg/kg in the contaminated soil were decreased to less than 1.71 mg/kg. Overall removal efficiency was 98.8%. In addition it was shown that 63.3% of the soils oil and grease was removed. An economic analysis was performed on the technology, and it was estimated that treatment costs for a site with 10,000 cubic yards of soil would be $170/ton.
