Impact/Purpose:

The overall objective of this task is to develop scientifically sound sampling and bioanalytical approaches for screening and monitoring of hazardous wastes. These techniques are expected to provide the Agency with improved screening and field portable methods to characterize, reduce, and control risk to human health and the environment. Specific objectives will include development and characterization of the following concepts:

SPMDs for passive accumulation of TICs

Bioassays for toxic and genotoxic compounds

MIPs for volatile and semivolatile toxic organics

Rapid screening assays using the previously listed components.

Description:

Numerous natural and man-made agents are continuously released into the environment due to human activity. Many of these agents cause irreversible damage to the normal biological functions leading to morbidity and mortality in the exposed organisms. The possibility of deliberate or accidental contamination in an industrial, commercial or residential setting has given rise to the need to monitor for the potential effects of hazardous chemicals in various environments. One of the reported effects for exposures to volatile and semi-volatile toxic industrial chemicals is DNA damage. The present study describes a simple and rapid assay based on changes in hybridization behavior of surrogate DNA to seven toxic industrial chemicals.
