SOURCE WATER PROTECTION OF PUBLIC DRINKING WATER WELLS: COMPUTER MODELING OF ZONES CONTRIBUTING RECHARGE TO PUMPING WELLS

Impact/Purpose:

The objective of this project is to develop computer tools to delineate the zone contributing recharge to public water supply wells, and thus, support State, Tribes, and communities toward best management practices as they revisit current delineations, and design wellhead protection areas for new wells.

Description:

Computer technology to assist states, tribes, and clients in the design of wellhead and source water protection areas for public water supply wells is being developed through two distinct SubTasks: (Sub task 1) developing a web-based wellhead decision support system, WellHEDSS, to allow professionals without specialized training in ground-water flow modeling to responsibly use simple wellhead protection and assessment (WHPA) tools and make well founded decisions about the need to use more sophisticated computer modeling techniques; and (Sub task 2) making the EPA WhAEM2000 ground water modeling framework better, faster, and cheaper.
