Description:
This paper presents electrochemical dechlorination of 2-chlorobiphenyl (2-Cl BP) in aqueous environment using palladium modified granular graphite electrodes. 2-Cl BP, the PCB congener that requires the highest reduction potential, was effectively dechlorinated in electrochemical reactors using cathodes of packed granular-graphite modified with palladium. The dechlorination of 2-Cl BP in a membrane reactor was very effective as indicated in the concentration decrease of 2-Cl BP and the concentration increase of the dechlorination product, biphenyl (BP). The dechlorination process proceeded simultaneously with the sorption of the reactant and the product. A mathematical model for the electrochemical reactor system was developed to describe both adsorption and electrochemical dechlorination of 2-Cl BP in the reactor system.
