Description:

Four years after the approval of its Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan (CCMP), the San Juan Bay Estuary Program (SJBEP) is working towards the implementation stage of its 49 actions. During the last three years the program has focused its efforts in developing a collaborative network with the organizations that are responsible for the implementation of the CCMP's actions. Growing public awareness and concern on environmental issues have been an important motivating factor for these entities. The Program's efforts have been guided by the formal timeline established in the CCMP. Primary Program achievements have occurred in the following areas: aquatic debris, public involvement, habitat, water sediment, partnerships. Progress has been made in previously identified challenge areas including community advisory committees, bylaws, agency coordination and networking, funds disbursement, education, communication/coordination, community outreach and public involvement and auditing. New priority areas/challenges include the actual progress of the implementation process, identifying the role of key stakeholders, barriers to CCMP implementation, education and outreach strategies and finance plans.
