Description:
The paper describes computer software, called SAGE, that can provide not only cleaning recommendations but also general information on various surface cleaning options. In short, it is an advisory system which can provide users with vital information on the cleaning process option best suited for their unique facility operation. SAGE software is designed to put itself in the shoes of the process engineer or operator whose task is to identify a replacement for a facility's present cleaning process. The facility typically may use chlorinated solvents such as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, methylene chloride, or chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)-113. SAGE provides recommendations and information needed to decide which options have the greatest potential of success for the unique situation presented by the user's facility. It then provides the general economic, technical, and installation information necessary to decide upon the most viable option. SAGE does not absolve the user of further study to decide upon a final cleaning system for that facility; however, it can eliminate possible months of work which may otherwise be necessary to research the multitude of possible cleaning options. The information provided by SAGE allows the user to concentrate on those processes that have the highest probability of success.
