Description:
This chapter reviews sediment chemistry, its effect on porewater chemistry and how this chemistry changes from place to place. We focus on the overall chemical environment of the sediments, for which a great deal is known from studies on sediment diagenesis and from which some predictions can be made on the potential chemical changes that occur during porewater extraction. These changes are examined in more detail in Chapter 5. The fundamental questions we address here are these:
1) What are the dominant chemical characteristics of sediment pore water, and how do these vary from place to place?
2) How do these characteristics affect contaminant bioavailability in pore water?
3) What potential changes in these characteristics need to be considered when pore water is extracted?
