Description:

The EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is a dynamic rainfall-runoff simulation model used for single event or long-term (continuous) simulation of runoff quantity and quality from primarily urban areas. SWMM was first developed in 1971 and has undergone several major upgrades since then. This document provides background and instructions for using the most recent edition, Version 5.0. This new version is a complete re-write of the previous release. Running under Windows, it provides an integrated environment for editing study area input data, running hydrologic, hydraulic, and water quality simulations, and viewing the results in a variety of formats. These include color-coded drainage area maps, time series graphs and tables, profile plots, and statistical frequency analyses. This user's manual contains a tutorial for learning how to use SWMM. It also provides a description of the various objects SWMM uses to model a drainage system and a short explanation of the numerical methods used to compute runoff quantity and quality and the techniques used to route this runoff through a system of drainage channels and sewers. The manual explains how to create a SWMM project, how to add new drainage system objects to a map of the area being modeled, and how to edit the properties of these objects. It also discusses how to set various simulation options, how to initiate a simulation, and how to view the results of a simulation in a variety of formats. The manual includes an appendix that describes how to run SWMM from a command line prompt rather than through Windows, and provides a detailed explanation of the format of the input data file required to run a SWMM simulation.
