Impact/Purpose:

The development of standards for Aquatic and Terrestrial Toxicity testing.

Description:

The development of standards through the consensus based process is often a long and arduous process even in the best of circumstances. The impetus to develop standards is a need to obtain high quality data for the evaluation of questions that often pertain to the development of regulations. Such was the case for the development of standards for Aquatic and Terrestrial Toxicity testing. The prime players in the effort to develop these standards for the last 23 years have been the USEPA and ASTM Committee #47 on Biological Fate and Environmental Effects. Although this relationship has some ups and downs, the overall interaction has been very positive and productive. Over 100 standards have been developed to date with new standards currently under development. A strong effort has been exerted to harmonize the methods between USEPA, ASTM, and other Standards organizations. The common purpose that ASTM and USEPA share is the desire to produce the highest quality standards to produce the highest quality data. These efforts have been fruitful over the past 20+ years, and the future is bright for a continued positive interactions on standards development
