REAL-TIME ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING: APPLICATIONS FOR HOMELAND SECURITY

Citation:

PETERSEN, D. REAL-TIME ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING: APPLICATIONS FOR HOMELAND SECURITY. Presented at Midwest Toxicology Conference, Cincinnati, OH, November 05, 2004.

Impact/Purpose:

To inform the public.

Description:

Real-time monitoring technology developed as part of the EMPACT program has a variety of potential applications. These tools can measure a variety of potential contaminants in the air, water, in buildings, or in the soil. Real-time monitoring technology allows these detection systems to post their data directly onto the public Internet or private networks. These tools allowed surveillance of emissions from factories, detection of spills to river systems and other applications as part of the EMPACT program. Now these tools are finding their way into homeland security applications where water surveillance tools are placed in reservoirs instead of recreational water bodies, and near troop deployments instead of factory locations. Continued development of these tools and techniques will be important in protecting the environment and public health irrespective of the contaminant source.
