Description:
The paper outlines EPA's role in investigating alternatives to replace the chlorofluorocarbon CFC-114 (1,1,2,2-tetrafluorodichloroethane) as the refrigerant in retrofitted Navy shipboard chillers. The isomers HFC-236ea (1,1,1,2,3,3-hexafluoropropane) and HFC-236fa (1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane) are potentially not ozone depleting replacements for CFC-114 and have completed preliminary toxicity evaluations, flammability tests, material compatibility tests, and engineering performance tests.
