Description:
This manuscript describes a novel statistical analysis technique developed by the authors for use in combining survey data carried out under different field protocols. We apply the technique to 83 years of survey data on avian songbird populations in northern lower Michigan to describe the community composition changes that occurred over the time period. The paper has two major results. First, survey data collected in independent studies can be combined to produce meaningful results in answering questions for which the original surveys were not designed. Second, neotropical migrant songbirds, a group of conservation concern, will respond positively to habitat amelioration on the breeding grounds.
