Citation:

Global Change Research News #11: Great Lakes Regional Assessment. 1999.

Description:

This project is being conducted as part of the first National Assessment of "The Potential Consequences of Climate Change and Climate Variability on the United States". With EPA sponsorship, the University of Michigan has organized a multi-disciplinary team of researchers to lead the Great Lakes Regional Assessment of the consequences of climate change. The Assessment is examining the possible effects of climate change on Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, as well as the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The Great Lakes contain about 95% of the U.S. fresh water supply, and the region is home to a significant percentage of U.S. agricultural and economic resources. Results from the Great Lakes Regional Assessment report will be submitted for inclusion in the National Assessment Synthesis Report to Congress. A major objective of the Great Lakes Regional Assessment is to identify actions for increasing the region's resiliency to climate variability, reducing negative impacts and taking advantage of opportunities created by climate change. Another objective is to identify research needed for evaluating adaptation options.
