Description:

Compromised sensory function is an adverse consequence of toxic exposure. Given the frequency with which it occurs and the ability to measure sensory function in both humans and animals, sensory evaluations offer fertile ground for cross-species extrapolation. In some cases, identical methods can be used to assess sensory function in humans and animals, although it is often simpler to measure homologous functions across species with different methods. Most important for the development of mechanistic models, however, is the presence and knowledge of homologous neural substrates / structures between organisms. With such knowledge, it is possible to measure different functions to evaluate the same underlying neural substrate.
