Impact/Purpose:

To understand children's risks from exposure to molds in their environment and to explore risk management options for mitigating those risks.

Description:

Monitoring for pathogenic Aspergillus species using a rapid, highly sensitive, quantitative polymerase chain reaction technique during carpet removal in a burn unit provided data which allowed the patients to be safely returned to the re-floored area sooner than if only conventional culture monitoring had been used.
