NOX EMISSION CONTROL OPTIONS FOR COAL-FIRED ELECTRIC UTILITY BOILERS

Citation:

Srivastava*, R K., R E. Hall*, S. Khan*, AND K. Culligan*. NOX EMISSION CONTROL OPTIONS FOR COAL-FIRED ELECTRIC UTILITY BOILERS. JOURNAL OF AIR AND WASTE MANAGEMENT. Air & Waste Management Association, Pittsburgh, PA, 55(9):1367-1388, (2005).

Description:

The paper reviews NOx control options for coal-fired electric utility boilers. (NOTE: Acid Rain NOx regulations, the Ozone Transport Commission's NOx Budget Program, revision of the New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) for NOx emissions from utility sources, and Ozone Transport rule-makings are among several recently promulgated regulations requiring reductions in NOx emissions from these boilers.) In doing so, it not only discusses the established commercial primary and secondary control technologies, but also examines what is being done to use them more effectively. While reviewing control technologies, the paper also examines the constraints associated with their application [e.g., the potential for increased SO3 emissions in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) applications]. Advances in primary control technologies have been used to achieve NOx reductions in excess of 50%. The recently preferred secondary technology, SCR, used at numerous coal-fired utility boilers, is designed to achieve NOx reductions in excess of 80%. Advances in secondary control technologies are focused on maximizing NOx reductions, while significantly lowering costs. Some emerging control technologies have achieved 85-90% NOx reduction.
