Introduction to Special Issue. Over a decade ago, the status of wetland and coastal habitat restoration was documented in two publications that have become landmark works in the field. In 1990, John Kusler of the Association of State Wetland Managers and Mary E. Kentula of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) organized a number of symposia that resulted in the publication Wetland Creation and Restoration: The Status of The Science (KUSLER and KENTULA, 1990). At the same time, Gordon Thayer organized a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) symposium on restoration and produced the publication Restoring The Nation�s Marine Environment (THAYER, 1992). These symposia and publications were among the first to put coastal and wetland restoration in the forefront of respective agency interests and missions. Since then, there have been advances and changes in goal setting for restoration projects, in the scientific approach to research and monitoring of restoration projects, and in user needs to address goals and to establish and meet success criteria for restoration.
