Description:

This meeting was held at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland plaza in Cincinnati, OH. The purpose of thie meeting was to discuss current Hazardous Substance Research Center and USEPA/ ORD superfund research, identify research needs, and foster collaborative efforts. The presentation entitled "Overview of EPA's Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP) started with the history of MWTP, partnerships, funding history since 1991, the magnitude of the ore mine waste problem, research and demonstration priorities and programmatic functions. Individual projects representative of the research and demonstration priorities were presented. These technologies include grouting, capping, biological reactors, permeable reactive barriers, and in-situ treatment of pit lakes. A solicitation for proposals goes out under
www.epa.gov/ORD/NRMRL.std.mtb in July of each year and proposals are sent in to EPA by mid-January of the next year. A technical integration committee composed of private industry, state, federal and regions ranks them high, medium, or low at a meeting held in Butte, MT in early April. Six new projects were funded in FY03. The "Mining Impacted Native American Lands" conference will be held September 9-11, 2003.
