Analytical Protocol for Cyclohexyl Sarin, Sarin, Soman and Sulfur Mustard Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry
Citation:
Campisano, R. Analytical Protocol for Cyclohexyl Sarin, Sarin, Soman and Sulfur Mustard Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry . U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, DC, EPA/600/R-16/115, 2016.
Impact/Purpose:
There is a need for development of sampling and analytical methods of priority chemical agents, such as chemical warfare agents, for environmental matrices. This document is for the determination of the chemical warfare agent O-ethyl-S-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl)methyl-phosphonothiolate (VX). The procedures have been multi-laboratory tested for preparation and analysis of VX in soil, wipe, and water samples. This analytical protocol involves microscale extraction, followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis to identify and measure VX. Soil and wipe extracts also might require a concentration step using nitrogen evaporation to achieve appropriate levels of quantitation. This will allow evaluation of the extent of contamination and effectiveness of decontamination of these dangerous chemicals in the event of release into the environment. This would be used by those responding to such incidents, the laboratories responsible for analysis, and the results used by decision-makers.
