Description:
The Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) collects a great deal of data from landscapes, streams, and estuaries around the country. These data are used primarily by EMAP for assessing the environmental condition of states, watersheds, and political and biogeographic regions, and secondarily by others for purposes ranging from local projects to global climate change. EMAP's data have long-term and broad-scale value and must be carefully managed to maintain their integrity and accessibility. They are first organized and documented by the data collectors (states, tribes, nonprofits, or federal groups), then compiled regionally and nationally. Four parts of EMAP's data system are shown here: the National Coastal Assessment database for coastal data, the Surface Waters Information Management (SWIM) system for streams data, Data Browsers (Oregon, Southern Rockies) for landscape data, and STORET for secondary use of aquatic data.
