Citation:

Impact/Purpose:

Evaluating air quality modeling systems such as CMAQ against available observations is key to building confidence in their use for regulatory applications and to guide future model development. The presentation provides an overview of progress and challenges in four different aspects of air quality model evaluation (operational, diagnostic, dynamic, and probabilistic). It is aimed at stimulating discussions by symposium participants on identifying high priority items for future model evaluation research. Such future research would benefit air quality modeling at the USEPA and the wider air quality modeling community.

Description:

This presentation provides an overview of research on air quality model evaluation being performed at USEPA. The overview is structured according to the model evaluation framework proposed by Dennis et al. (2010). Examples are provided for advances in operational evaluation, diagnostic evaluation, dynamic evaluation, and probabilistic evaluation. Challenges and potential future research directions are presented at the end of each of these four sections.
