Maxwell, K. AND C. Milhollin. EPA flooded homes website : applied anthropology and design research. National Environmental Health Association's Annual Education Conference, Spokane, WA, June 28 - July 01, 2022.

Impact/Purpose:

Helping families clean up and repair homes affected by flooding is a critical resilience step. Flooded homes present indoor air quality and other environmental health risks. Developing effective risk communication about what these risks are and how to address them requires both technical and social science research. This project uses disaster anthropology and human-centered design to develop a website that contains how-to videos, graphics, and other content that meets people where they're at (socially, emotionally, financially) after a disaster. It is intended to help homeowners, renters, and volunteers safely clean out and repair flooded homes. It may be of interest to emergency ,management, environmental, and public health agencies.

Description:

Presentation about the recently released flooded homes website for a session on community engagement and environmental research. The focus of the wesbite is to apply disaster anthropology and human-centered design in order to communicate both technical and social responses to flooding.
