SOLVENT FREE OXIDATION OF ALCOHOLS USING IRON (III) NITRATE NONAHYDRATE
Citation:
Varma*, R S. AND V Namboodiri**. SOLVENT FREE OXIDATION OF ALCOHOLS USING IRON (III) NITRATE NONAHYDRATE. Presented at IUPAC CHEMRAWN XIV CONFERENCE, Boulder, CO, June 09 - 13, 2001.
Impact/Purpose:
To inform the public.
Description:
Oxidation of alcohols have been conducted with metal nitrate reagents on various mineral supports such as clay, silica and zeolite etc. To circumvent the limitations of these supported reagents namely their preparation using solvents and short shelf-life, we explored the use of inexpensive neat iron(III) nitrate nonahydrate. The salient features of this solvent-free oxidative protocol that occurs at moderate temperature (50-800 C) will be described. The procedure will be exemplified by oxidation of a variety of alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in open containers. Additionally, the utility of this reagent in nitration of styrene and phenols will also be discussed.
