Estuaries, although minor geographical features at the global scale, have major importance for society and the world’s economies. This chapter introduces estuaries by presenting an overview of definitions, origins, physical, chemical and ecological attributes, and the interactions of estuarine ecosystems with human activities, including attempts to restore degraded estuaries to a more desirable ecological condition.
