| Subtitle: Community Action Fights Non-Point Source Pollution |
| Case Study Type:
Protection
|
| Description: In Berkeley County, WV, farmers and residents rely on ground water that is vulnerable to diffuse seepage of fecal coliform, sediment, and nutrients, as well as localized contamination from underground fuel tanks and household chemicals. It is estimated that 60 percent of drinking water sources are contaminated by nonpoint and point source pollution. WV WaterSafe, a program that provides assistance and public education for water resources protection, provided outreach targeted to the public and potential contaminators. Activities include stakeholder meetings, participatory risk assessments, referral and outreach services, and risk reporting to reduce participants' role in threatening their water source. |
