    Title: West Virginia: Berkeley County
Subtitle: Task Force Addresses Ground Water Threats
    Case Study Type: Protection
Description: Berkeley County WV ground water is threatened by industrial waste and stormwater runoff. The Berkeley Source Water Protection Taskforce (BSWPT) formed, with representatives from federal, state, and local agencies, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions and the public. The BSWPT created a final SWP plan that categorized threats and recommended protection measures to address threats. While the plan is pending approval, some measures soon to be adopted include an outreach brochure and the formation of a Source Water Advisory Council. (See Source Water Protection Project Potomac Headwaters, West Virginia for more details.)

    Title: West Virginia: Potomac Headwaters
Subtitle: Community Confronts Source Water Threats Through Cooperative Planning
    Case Study Type: Protection
Description: Berkeley County, WV, relies on a ground water source that is vulnerable to the impacts of increased development. The County SWP Task Force teamed up with water professionals, local and state officials, non-profit organizations, and citizen groups to draft a comprehensive SWP strategic plan. SWP measures include the formation of a Water Advisory Council to administer protection grants and advise the County Commission, management of the Water Resources Public Information Program, ongoing cooperation with USGS to apply scientific knowledge to protection, and ongoing monitoring of source water quantity and quality for use in County planning.

Title: West Virginia: South Branch Potomac Watershed
Subtitle: Community Action Fights Non-Point Source Pollution
    Case Study Type: Protection
Description: In Berkeley County, WV, farmers and residents rely on ground water that is vulnerable to diffuse seepage of fecal coliform, sediment, and nutrients, as well as localized contamination from underground fuel tanks and household chemicals. It is estimated that 60 percent of drinking water sources are contaminated by nonpoint and point source pollution. WV WaterSafe, a program that provides assistance and public education for water resources protection, provided outreach targeted to the public and potential contaminators. Activities include stakeholder meetings, participatory risk assessments, referral and outreach services, and risk reporting to reduce participants' role in threatening their water source.
