| Title: New Jersey: Lawrence Brook Watershed, Middlesex County |
| Subtitle: Stream Monitoring Volunteers Target Susceptible Drinking Water Source |
| Case Study Type:
Assessment
|
| Description: Lawrence Brook in New Jersey's Middlesex County provides 1.5 million gallons of drinking water to surrounding townships. It is considered an impaired stream due to the presence of toxic metals. The source water assessment by the NJ DEP showed the brook to have medium to high susceptibility to contamination. The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership initiated a two-year volunteer stream health monitoring program. Outcomes thus far have included the discovery of unusually low pH and the detection of an illegal dumping site. Still in progress, the monitoring project's results will be collated and presented in a final report. |

The videos present TN geology; contamination threats; and BMPs such as proper water well construction, reducing animal waste, proper pesticide and fertilizer application, and county/city planning. The University of Memphis and Middle Tennessee State University provided assistance. |
