Title: Colorado: Cherry Creek Watershed, South Denver Metro Area
Subtitle: Watershed Partnership Promotes Smart Growth
    Case Study Type: Protection
Description: To mitigate the effects of rapid development in Douglas and Arapahoe Counties on the Cherry Creek, CO, watershed, the Cherry Creek Stewardship Partners formed in 1999, funded by and consisting of citizens and representatives from land use jurisdictions, resource management agencies, conservation, recreation, and historic preservation groups, and the business community. The partnership's efforts to link economic, environmental and community needs resulted in the creation of the Cherry Creek Basin Open Space Conservation and Stewardship Plan. The project made several recommendations for smart growth planning, including engaging land use agencies and developers in smart growth strategies, education on BMPs, establishing mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the smart growth strategy, and documenting the smart growth process for use by other communities.

    Title: Nebraska: Crawford
Subtitle: Grazing is Focus of Rural Nebraska Project, National Rural Water Association
    Case Study Type: Protection
Description: Crawford, NE (population 1,107) relies on a groundwater (GWUDI and wells). Contamination risks include livestock rearing and similar activities that release nutrients, bacteria, and other organic substances into area surface and ground water supplies. Working with the Nebraska RWA, Crawford adopted a ground water protection program involving cooperation with the local farming community to improve land use practices. Based on another Natural Resources District's Groundwater Management Plan, Crawford established required and voluntary BMPs, while a county extension office provides classes for landowners. The State has prohibited feedlots from stream watersheds, while local counties enforce zoning regulations restricting livestock grazing. Crawford also developed a contingency plan.
