| Subtitle: Diverse Organizations Team Up as a National Model for Source Water Protection |
| Case Study Type:
Protection
|
| Description: The Boothbay Region Water District's 5,100 customers depend on two ponds for drinking water, one of which is considered to be among Maine's most susceptible sources, especially to nutrients, sediment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and MTBE. The Water District collaborated with a number of diverse organizations to address both point and non-point sources including sewer lines, septic systems, underground storage tanks, stormwater, residential development, and transportation. Participants represented state drinking water, transportation, and environmental agencies; NRCS; local communities; an interstate commission; RWA; and a university. Protection activities include the development of a watershed protection program, a new ordinance concerning phosphorus limits, stormwater erosion control, a hydrogeologic evaluation and stream monitoring. |

| Case Study Type:
Assessment and Protection
|
| Description: Norway is a small town in southwestern Maine, part of a geographically-linked tri-town area together with South Paris and Oxford. In 1965, Norway installed its single municipal ground water well, slightly less than one-half mile beyond its border, in the Town of Oxford. Location of the well outside of Norway's jurisdiction has recently presented some major challenges with respect to source water protection. |
| Title: Virginia: Augusta County |
| Subtitle: County Develops Comprehensive Ground Water Protection Plan |
| Case Study Type:
Protection
|
| Description: In Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, ten ground water-based systems in Augusta County serve 62,000 customers in a rapidly developing area. The Augusta County Service Authority (ACSA) is developing an extensive Groundwater Protection Plan that establishes protection measures for the County as a whole as well as for individual source waters. Protection measures include evaluating the susceptibility of current groundwater sources; reviewing the County Comprehensive Plan, zoning maps, and rules; identifying potential funding for SWP and outreach; and generating a protection plan for each source. ASCA has also developed and implemented emergency management and prevention measures. |
