| Title: Louisiana: Avoyelles Parish |
| Subtitle: School Volunteers Educate Rural Louisiana Population |
| Case Study Type:
Protection
|
| Description: In Avoyelles Parish in rural Louisiana, half the population is served by water systems that are highly susceptible to contamination from above ground and underground storage tanks containing fuel and pesticides, dry cleaning and laundry operations, and a pesticide flying service. Louisiana DEQ visited 12 schools in the Parish, asking parents to volunteer for a local drinking water protection committee. As a result, 20 volunteers joined a committee with local elected officials, water system operators, and concerned government employees to implement protection measures. The local team educated people at 125 facilities on BMPs, helping pass an ordinance in the Parish's largest city, distributed brochures on ways to protect drinking water, and posted signs near water supply wells indicating the existence of protection areas. It also encouraged participation from the State Fire Marshall's Office and the Cooperative Extension service. |
