Demonstration Projects for Alabama

  • Title: Alabama, Mobile: Cluster Systems, Alabama

Description: Untreated wastewater is being removed from overloaded municipal sewers (sewer mining) for satellite treatment by decentralized processes for reuse to irrigate a city park. The demonstration site treats the sewage with four different technologies to determine performance and operational requirements. Another aspect of this project is the successful demonstration of decentralized alternatives to extending the already overloaded sewers further. The MAWSS management of these low-cost sewer and cluster treatment facilities has enabled planned growth in areas east of the city.

Demonstration Projects for Florida

  • Title: Florida, Florida Keys: Alternative Technologies, Florida

Description: The Florida Keys OWNRS Demonstration Project was designed to show the use and capability of alternative technologies. Ten alternative onsite technologies using wastewater from a prison facility on Big Pine Key were tested. The goal was to evaluate those systems' ability to meet Florida AWT standards for nitrogen and phosphorus (3 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively). Additional monitoring of these systems was also conducted. Phase II of the demonstration project was designed to combine advanced technologies and management together in an innovative approach, which was to serve as a model for the Keys.
