Graphic of house and septic systemSeptic systems are regulated by state and local governments. EPA has a wide variety of tools and resources to assist state and local governments in their efforts to improve the management of septic systems.

Wastewater Information System Tool (TWIST) - TWIST is a new aid for managing onsite and clustered (decentralized) wastewater treatment systems. Available on CD ROM, it is an adaptable tool for tracking and managing onsite and other clustered wastewater treatment systems. It's designed to track information related to homes and facilities served, permits, site evaluations, types of systems, inspections, and complaints.

Guidelines for Developing Septic System Management Programs

Guidelines and General Guidance - Provides links to documents that address important topics such as how to start a septic system management program and septic system design manuals.
