Abstract: Chemical monitoring of the environment is performed in the United States by Federal and State agencies, local governments, industries, organizations, and private individuals. The major reasons for monitoring are for compliance with laws and regulations, investigation of suspected environmental contamination, and general concerns for the protection of human health and the environment. An overview of the chemical monitoring performed by the above entities will be presented. The role of the U. S. EPA in environmental chemical monitoring will be discussed. This will include the Regional and Program Office responsibilities and activities and how the Office of Research and Development (ORD) is involved. General areas of current ORD research will be covered and examples will be given of current research projects involving passive sampling devices.

This work has been funded wholly or in part by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and has been approved for publication. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute endorsement or recommendation for use.
