| Abstract |
The revised document provides EPA guidance on controlling asbestos-containing materials found in buildings. The document (1) provides a current summary of data on exposure to airborne asbestos, (2) survey procedures for determining if asbestos-containing material is present in buildings, (3) explains how to establish a special operations and maintenance program in a building found to contain asbestos, (4) reviews technical issues confronted when assessing the potential for exposure to airborne asbestos, in particular indoor settings, (5) suggests a structured process for selecting a particular course of action given information on physical condition of the asbestos, exposure levels, assessment methods, and abatement techniques, (6) summarizes and updates information on applicability, effectiveness, and relative costs of alternative remedial actions, (7) introduces and discusses criteria for determining successful asbestos control. The material presented is a summary of information and experience gained by EPA through its Asbestos in Schools and Buildings Program and by a wide spectrum of experts in the field. |
