Contents Notes In this project, we propose to lay the groundwork for linking the existing flagship project IA model CIAS, to existing continental-scale IA models for long-range trans-boundary air pollution (TAP), namely the RAINS and RAINS-ASIA models developed by IIASA. CC and TAP are usually considered separately, even though they share many common drivers and methods of mitigation, and impact on an overlapping range of sectors. Since fuel use is the primary driver for TAP and CC, and RAINS currently has a short time horizon and considers add-on technology only as a means for emission reduction, our objective is to develop a pilot structure for an innovative dynamic module simulating technical choice and fuel switching. TAP strategies require modelling on a country by country basis, so our dynamic module must also do so. We will achieve this through workshops between IIASA and the ETECH+ team who are handling the energy-economics modelling in CIAS, and agree on a methodology. Outputs will be the pilot model structure, and a supporting document justifying the selected methodology. Full module development requires further funding for a follow-up project. .
