| Abstract |
The research was initiated in order to examine the social implications of lake restoration programs and to develop a standardized methodology for social impact assessment. A cultural ecological model is employed since it provides perspectives on the relationship of human adaptation and cultural development in evolutionary terms. Use of the model calls for examination of both spatial and temporal parameters. The model has not been tested in a specific research environment, but it has been developed from strategies which have proved effective in examining the social implications of public works projects. A general research strategy is set forth to encompass historical, geographical, and ethnological components in a cultural setting. Data are quantified for a contemporary social profile, and for projections with and without project implementation. All data are examined in terms of five instrumental cultural functions. Criteria for socio-cultural assessment are employed from a research matrix. |
