| Abstract |
Over the past 20 years the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published a number of guidance documents containing aquatic life criteria recommendations for copper (e.g., U.S. EPA 1980, 1985, 1986, 1996). The present document contains EPA's latest criteria recommendations for protection of aquatic life in ambient water from acute and chronic toxic effects from copper. These criteria are based on the latest available scientific information and supersedes EPA's previously published recommendations for copper. This document provides updated guidance to States and authorized Tribes to establish water quality standards under the Clean Water Act (CWA) to protect aquatic life from copper. Under the CWA, State and authorized Tribes are to establish water quality criteria to protect designated uses. Although this document constitutes EPA's scientific recommendations regarding ambient concentrations of copper, it does not substitute for the CWA or EPA's regulations, nor is it a regulation itself. |
