Abstract Under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986, Congress requires EPA to involve States in the Superfund program in a 'substantial and meaningful' way. EPA's State and Local Coordination Branch (SLCB) is responsible for developing regulations, guidance, and policy related to this Congressional mandate. As part of its responsibilities, the SLCB tries to maintain comprehensive information about State capabilities to contribute to or manage cleanups at hazardous waste sites. Under a cooperative agreement with EPA, ELI has collected, organized, and summarized the information presented here on the 52 State cleanup programs.
