| Abstract |
Seventeen tools or methodologies designed for or applicable to the preparation of environmental impact statements are reviewed to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and potential range of use. Specific criteria are suggested for evaluating the adequacy of an impact assessment methodology in terms of: impact identification, impact measurement, impact interpretation, impact communication, resource requirements, replicability, and, flexibility. The reviews presented serve as an introduction to the range of tools available and demonstrate that no single approach to impact assessment is superior in all circumstances. |
