Abstract The objective of this research field study was to evaluate the operational methods for optimization of nitrogen removal in the rapid-infiltration process. Previous studies at the same site had showed a high degree of biological nitrification but essentially no nitrogen removal through denitrification. A further objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of removal of other pollutional constituents under the operational conditions necessary for enhanced nitrogen removal.
