Abstract
Two water distribution systems were studied over a 1-year period. Temporal fluctuations in a number of physical, chemical and biological parameters were examined. Total and pigmented bacterial counts, total coliforms, and fecal coliforms were determined at four locations within each distribution system on a bimonthly basis and on a monthly basis at source locations. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated bacteria associated with pipe surfaces, and with about 1 to 17 percent of suspended particles in the untreated groundwater system. Bacterial counts increased from source to site locations in both distribution systems, suggesting that regrowth occurred. The largest increases were noted in the unchlorinated Garden Grove System, but the magnitude of increases was site dependent.
