Abstract | A biological survey of the fish, macroinvertebrates, algae, aquatic plants, protozoans, and bacteria was conducted on the South River, Virginia, in September 1970. The purpose of this survey was to measure the ecological condition of a system receiving agricultural, domestic, and industrial wastes. Samples were collected at 8 sites to determine the effects of various wastes on the biota of the South River. The fauna and flora at each station were examined to determine the diversity, density, and distribution of aquatic life in relation to physical and chemical water quality. It was found that the biological recovery was not complete fourteen miles downstream of Waynesboro at Harriston, Virginia. |
