| Abstract | PART I: The Office of Solid Waste (OSW) of EPA proposed certain restrictions on the land disposal of hazardous wastes. To ensure protection of human health, OSW proposed to place limits on the extent of air and water contamination that may result from long-term, law-level releases of hazardous chemicals from land disposal sites. The two principal determinants of these limits are risk-specific doses (RSDs) and reference doses (RFDs). PART II: A discussion of the various considerations influencing the design of protocols for toxicity testing, provided to guide identification of the most cost-effective means to collect toxicity data, is presented in Part II of this report. Specifically, the options available for selecting the species and sex, and species number, number of dose levels, sample size, and extent of animal examination toward the end of identifying the minimally-acceptable protocol for conducting a required toxicity test are examined. |
