Abstract
In promoting human safety, the basic reason for making studies in man is species difference. Differences in toxic as well as therapeutic effects frequently depend on differences in biotransformation, which are well documented and may be qualitative, quantitative or both. Undoubtedly, only a small proportion of the true variation has been described. The facts that man is unique and that studies in man are desirable are taken as aciomatic in this paper. The body of the paper is concerned with the organization and execution of studies in volunteers and with the legal implications of such studies.
