"Plant diseases are a serious threat to food production. This unique volume provides the fundamental knowledge and practical use of B.subtilis as a promising biocontrol agent. In order to replace chemical pesticides, one possibility is microbial pesticides using safe microbes. Bacillus subtilis is one of several candidates. Screening of the bacterium, the application of plant tests, clarification of its suppressive mechanism to plant pathogens and engineering aspects of suppressive peptides production are presented here. The author illustrates how B. subtilis is far more advantageous than, for example, Pseudomonas in biocontrol and can be considered as an useful candidate"-- Cover; Half Title; Series Page; Title Page; Copyright Page; Contents; Preface; Author; Contents; Preface; Author; 1: Introduction; 1.1 Biological Control of Plant Pathogens by Pseudomonas Species; 1.2 Biological Control of Plant Pathogens by Bacillus Species; 1.3 Production of Antifungal Substances; 1.4 Production of Siderophores; 1.5 Genetic Analysis; 1.6 Ecological Fitness in Soil; 1.7 Production of Antibiotics in Liquid Cultivation; 1.8 Operation of Solid-State Cultivation; 1.9 Plant Test; 1.10 Composts; References 2: In Vitro Selection of B. subtilis as a Candidate of Biocontrol Agent and Characterization of Suppressive Products2.1 Suppressive Effect of Composts on Phytopathogenic Fungi (1); 2.1.1 Materials and Methods; 2.1.1.1 Compost Used; 2.1.1.2 Preparation of Suspensions of Phytopathogenic Fungi; 2.1.1.3 Suppressiveness Testing of Composts; 2.1.2 Results; 2.2 Isolation of Bacteria Suppressive to Fungi from Composts; 2.2.1 Materials and Methods; 2.2.1.1 Isolation of Suppressive Bacteria; 2.2.1.2 Suppressiveness Testing of Isolated Bacteria; 2.2.1.3 Cultivation of Phytopathogenic Fungi and Bacteria 2.2.2 Results2.3 Suppressiveness by B. subtilis and by Culture Broth of the Bacterium to Phytopathogenic Microorganisms; 2.3.1 Materials and Methods; 2.3.2 Results; 2.4 Identification of Suppressive Substance, Iturin; 2.4.1 Materials and Methods; 2.4.2 Results; 2.5 In Vivo Test by Culture Broth; 2.5.1 Materials and Methods; 2.5.2 Results; 2.6 Biological Properties of Each Component of Iturin; 2.6.1 Materials and Methods; 2.6.2 Results; 2.6.3 Discussion; 2.7 Inoculation of B. subtilis NB22 into Compost Products or during the Composting Process (12); 2.7.1 Materials and Methods 2.7.1.1 Composting Material Used and Composting Operation2.7.1.2 Compost Used; 2.7.1.3 Inoculation of B. subtilis NB22-1 to Composts; 2.7.1.4 Counting the Number of B. subtilis NB22-1 Cells in Compost Samples; 2.7.1.5 Preparation of Suspensions of Phytopathogenic Microorganisms; 2.7.1.6 Suppressiveness Testing of Composts; 2.7.2 Results; 2.7.2.1 Survival of B. subtilis NB22-1 in Compost Products; 2.7.2.2 Sterilized Composts Inoculated with B. subtilis NB22-1; 2.7.2.3 Survivability of B. subtilis NB22-l in the Composting Process; 2.8 Characterization of B. subtilis RB14 2.8.1 Suppressive Effect by RB14 In Vitro (14)2.8.1.1 Materials and Methods; 2.8.1.2 Results; 2.8.2 Isolation of Iturin A and Surfactin from the Culture Broth of RB14; 2.8.2.1 Materials and Methods; 2.8.2.2 Results; 2.9 Characterization of B. subtilis YB8; 2.9.1 Production of Surfactin (22); 2.9.1.1 Methods and Results; 2.9.2 Production of Plipastatin; 2.9.2.1 Material and Methods; 2.9.2.2 Results; References; 3: In Vivo Plant Tests; 3.1 Biological Control of Crown and Root Rot and Bacterial Wilt (1); 3.1.1 Materials and Methods (1); 3.1.1.1 Bacterial Culture
