Abstract | Preparation of nitrate-specific ion-exchange resins, which incorporate selected primary amines grafted onto polystyrene, has been investigated. The best selectivity for nitrate ion over chloride ion was obtained with the 1-naphthylmethlaminomethyl derivative of polystyrene (1-NMA resin). Nitrate was adsorbed quantitatively from feed solutions containing five times as much chloride ion as nitrate ion. Under identical conditions, commercial weak-base resins removed only 70% of the nitrate ion. The 1-NMA resin could be regenerated repeatedly in the chloride form by HCl, but attempts at alkaline regeneration led to irreproducible results. Recommendations for future work include investigation of the effects of crosslinking, addition of hydrophilic functional groups, quaternization of the amine, and incorporation of different, nitrate-selective, functional groups.
