Abstract
Sugarbeet factory transport (flume) water wastes were treated in pilot-sized anaerobic, facultative and aerobic ponds to remove BOD. Physical, chemical and mechanical data were collected on the performance of each pond which showed cause for abandoning the facultative phase of treating. BOD removal in the anaerobic pond was a linear function of the BOD loading and up to a loading of 2,000 pounds of BOD per acre per day, 80% removal was accomplished with the assistance of mechanical aeration. The algae (aerobic), pond was mixed by means of fours 12,000 gpm propeller pumps. Some unseparated algae pond effluent was recycled to the anaerobic pond providing organic nitrogen, phosphorus and 'seed' for the microbial transformations. Additional nutrients were required for maximum performance. The system was effective in converting soluble BOD to insoluble BOD. The report contains 42 figures and 11 tables which show potential commercial application of certain segments of the processes investigated. (Modified author abstract)
