Abstract
Acute oral toxicity was evaluated in groups of 5 male albino Greenacres rats administered, by gavage, benzotriazole at dose levels of 46.4, 100 and 215 mg/kg in a 10% (w/v) suspension, or 464, 1000 and 2150 mg/kg in a 50% suspension. Mortality was observed within 14 days of dosing (4 rats each in the 1000 and 2150 mg/kg). No mortalities were observed at any dose level of the 10% suspension. The oral LD50 was 909 mg/kg (95% confidence limit = 546 to 1510 mg/kg). Clinical observations included depressed righting and placement reflexes among animals of the 46.4, 100 and 215 mg/kg dose groups. At high dose levels, observations included depressed righting and placement reflexes, absence of pain, shallow respiration, followed by death. Gross necropsy revealed paled extremities, slight to moderate congestion of lungs, kidneys and adrenals, and slight irritation of the small intestines.
