Abstract
Documentation is provided for a conference cosponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and held in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina on April 26, 1979. The general topic is toxicological assessment of health effects from the rapidly developing synthetic fuels industry. In particular, the discussions focus on the Paraho crude shale oil that was produced by Development Engineering, Inc. (Anvil Points, Colorado) and refined into diesel and jet fuels by the Standard Oil Company of Ohio. Summaries of both operations are presented. Also discussed is the collection, storage, and distribution to toxicologists of sample materials from these operations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency/U.S. Department of Energy Fossil Fuels Research Materials Facility (Oak Ridge National Laboratory). Other chapters survey ongoing and planned testing of the Paraho shale oil materials by investigators from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The application of microbial, cellular, and whole animal bioassays is considered.
